Overseas Student Scholarship, University of Abertay Dundee, UK

Overseas Student Scholarship Scheme
Academic Year 2012-2013
University of Abertay Dundee
The Overseas Student Scholarship Fund is open to students living outside the European Union and the European Free Trade Area, who are liable to pay overseas tuition fees and whom the University of Abertay Dundee believes would bring to the University additional personal and academic qualities. The Fund will support individual scholarships based on academic merit, and/or personal achievement in either sports or music. They will be available for students enrolling for study at Abertay in September 2012.
The value of each scholarship award will be directly related to the quality of the individual applicant’s academic merit and/or his or her personal achievements in sport or music.
The value of the award to individuals may therefore vary, but would not exceed the value of the tuition fee, and be subject to the amount of the total Scholarship Fund remaining when the application is considered.
Deadline for Applications
The University has set 31st January 2012 as the deadline for applications for the first round of awards. Two further rounds of applications for the academic year 2012/13 will be invited with deadlines of the 30th April and 31st July 2012.
Students applying for one or more full years of study at the University of Abertay Dundee, at either undergraduate or postgraduate level, will be eligible to apply for a scholarship.
Undergraduate students who are granted a place on a University of Abertay Dundee full-time degree course and are awarded a scholarship will benefit from the scholarship funding each year, for up to four years depending on the length of their course1. For taught postgraduate degrees, successful applicants will enjoy scholarship funding for the duration of their course (normally between 12 and 18 months).
The Academic Merit Scholarships will be available to those with outstanding academic merit, based on their proven academic record at school and/or college and/or university at the point of application.
The Personal Achievement Scholarships will be available to those applicants whose personal achievements in sport or music demonstrate a commitment and determination to excel in other aspects of life.
The Personal Achievement Scholarships are not being presented as Sports Scholarships or Music Scholarships in the conventional sense. They are however designed to reward those who can demonstrate their achievements to date in their chosen musical or sporting field. The University of Abertay Dundee has a strong record of individual and institutional achievement in both areas. It has run a highly successful Elite Athletes programme for many years, supporting individual sports men and women who are competing at national or international level, and who have also represented the University in their sport. Among Abertay’s sporting alumni are: a women’s tae kwon do world champion, a European amateur golf champion, and international competitors for Scotland and or the UK in rugby union, judo, athletics, figure-skating, hockey, gymnastics, soccer, and waterpolo. In music, Abertay is one of only a handful of universities in the UK to have its own pipe band, linked to a thriving University traditional music club.
Among the sporting scholarships will be: 11 Cricketing Excellence Scholarships, 8 Golf Handicap Scholarships, 11 Football Scholarship, 15 Rugby Union Scholarship, 5 Basketball Star Player Scholarship. Other sporting scholarships are available for Volley Ball, Hockey, Badminton, Ladies Netball, Boxing, and Snow Sports.
Applicants will be asked to justify their applications through, for example, membership of their relevant regional or national sporting teams or demonstrable excellence at club level.
Among the available music scholarships will be: 2 Piano Solo Performance Scholarships, 2 Piano Ensemble Scholarships, 4 Digital Keyboard Performance Scholarship, 2 Guitar Solo Performance Scholarships, 2 Guitar Ensemble Performance Scholarship as well as scholarships for all sections of orchestral performance, as well as traditional musical instruments (non-western) and traditional western musical instruments (e.g. Fiddle, Bagpipes). Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their achievements through certified performance skills in their chosen musical form.
Guidance Notes
Eligibility: You can only apply for a scholarship if you have submitted an application for a place on a degree or postgraduate programme at Abertay.
Level of musical/sporting achievement required
We would expect that you will be able to submit evidence of having achieved an advanced level by a recognised body in the musical or sporting world.

Robert S McNamara Fellowships Program, World Bank

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from eligible countries preparing a doctoral thesis. Research grants cover residence costs for a 5 to 10 month period in a renowned university or research center. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers.
Who Can Apply?
Only lecturers and researchers from eligible countries working on their doctoral thesis can apply for the fellowship. Candidates should be under 45 years, and have completed any course work or exams required for their doctoral program.
What Does the Program Support?
The purpose of the grant is to help fellows advance their doctoral research work through a residency period of five to ten months in a host institution in a country other than their home country or country of residence. During the research period at the host institution, the fellows are expected to have access to essential resources such as reference books and research publications, databases, and software; attend seminars and eventually courses; and to benefit by interacting with peers.
Host Institution
Candidates should be accepted or invited by a host institution which would designate an academic advisor to assist the fellow during his research period. Host institutions should also commit to provide the fellow with basic amenities such as office space and access to a computer, and to facilitate his/her research activities.
Fields of Research
Candidate’s field of research should be related to development at the master’s level, in fields such as economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or other development-related subject.
Fellowships Award
Eligible candidates are evaluated by external reviewers based on three criteria: academic performance, teaching and research experience, and relevance of the proposed research program. The top candidates are submitted to the Selection Committee, which includes World Bank senior experts and Donors representatives, for final selection. In addition to the merit criteria, the Selection Committee takes into account other factors such as availability of budget, geographical diversity and gender balance.
Grants
Candidates are requested to submit a budget for their fellowship covering the costs related to their research program: travel; insurance and living expenses; fees for courses and participation to seminars; and a books and software allowance. The grant amount to be awarded to each fellow will be decided by the Selection Committee. The maximum amount of the grant is US$ 25,000.
Fellow’s Commitment
Fellows are required to issue two reports, a mid-term report during the fellowship period and a final report containing the results of the research. The results of the McNamara fellows research work may be considered for publication by the World Bank. Fellows are expected to return to their home countries and resume their academic or research position upon completion of the fellowship. They are also expected to mention the McNamara fellowship award in any publication related to their doctoral research work, including their thesis, and to provide the Program with a copy of their thesis upon graduation.
The deadline for submission of applications for Robert S. McNamara (RSM) Fellowships Program is July 31, 2012.

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) for Short Courses

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) for short courses can be used for a number of selected courses and are offered by education institutions in the Netherlands. The institutions provide professional training at postsecondary level in several fields of study. The courses lead to a Dutch certificate or a diploma and their duration varies from two weeks to twelve months.
Eligibility
A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship for a short course must:
  • be a mid-career professional with at least three years’ relevant work experience;
  • be a national of, and working and living in one of the developing countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
  • be nominated by their employer, who pledges to continue paying their salary and guarantees that they will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of the fellowship period;
  • have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the short courses on the course list 2012-2013. This means that candidates must meet all the requirements set by the Dutch institution;
  • not have received more than one NFP short course fellowships;
  • not have received an NFP short course fellowship in the year prior to the fellowship application;
  • not be employed by:
    • a multinational corporation (for instance Shell, Unilever etc.) or
    • a large national and/-or commercial organisation or
    • a bilateral donor organisation (for instance USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid etc.) or
    • multilateral donor organisation, (for instance a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB, etc.) or
    • international NGO’s (for instance Oxfam, Plan, Care, etc.)
  • have completed and submitted an NFP short course fellowship application including all the required documentation before the applicable NFP fellowship application deadline;
  • be employed in an area to which the study will make a relevant contribution;
  • have a clear-cut, functional relationship with a relevant organisation and be in a position to introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge into that organisation;
  • be available for the entire period of the course and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire course;
  • endorse the objective and the aim of the NFP. The aim of the NFP cannot be reached if the fellowship holder does not return to his or her own country. Nuffic would like to urge fellowship holders to return to their home country upon finishing the course or programme to meet the NFP aim in the most effective way.
Fellowship application procedure
As stated above, to be eligible for an NFP fellowship, candidates need to be admitted to the short course for which they would like an NFP fellowship.
Please note that the fellowship application procedure has two important types of deadlines:
  1. the academic admission deadline
  2. the fellowship application deadline.
Obtaining academic admission to a short course
Candidates first apply for admission directly to the Dutch institution that offers the short course of their choice.
The Dutch institution assesses the application and decides whether or not to admit the candidate to the short course. Candidates will receive a letter from the institution informing them if they have been admitted. Nuffic has no part in the academic admission process. A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship must have been unconditionally admitted to a Dutch institution for the course or programme for which the candidate applies for an NFP fellowship. This means that the candidate must have met all the academic and administrative requirements set by the Dutch institution.
Candidates are strongly advised to apply as early as possible for admission to a Dutch institution to allow these institutions enough time to process all the applications for admission in time.
Academic admission deadline
This indicates the latest date that the Dutch institution will accept applications from candidates who also wish to apply for an NFP fellowship.
The academic admission deadlines for admission to short courses vary per course and can change throughout the year. For this reason, candidates are advised to contact the Dutch institution directly for up-to-date information. Occasionally, the Dutch institution’s deadline for applying for admission to a course is later than the NFP deadline for fellowship applications. Nevertheless, to be eligible for an NFP fellowship, candidates need to be admitted to the short course for which they would like to receive an NFP fellowship at the time of the NFP fellowship applications deadline.
Applying for an NFP fellowship
Candidates can only apply for a fellowship for one short course per fellowship application deadline. Being admitted to more than one course with the same fellowship application deadline means that candidates will have to choise one course before applying for a fellowship. If a candidate submits more than one application per fellowship deadline for a course in the same application deadline the last received application will be regarded as valid.
Applications have to be submitted through Scholarships Online (SOL). Through SOL candidates can apply for fellowships online and they can check the status of an application. Other parties such as the Dutch institutions, the embassies and consulates will use SOL to add information about an NFP fellowship application. The embassies and consulates will also use SOL to assess NFP fellowship applications.
SOL can be accessed through official website. This page also contains more instructions about applying online.
What does an NFP short courses fellowship application consist of?
  • a completed online NFP fellowship application submitted via SOL6;
  • an employer’s statement nominating the candidate for an NFP fellowship;
  • a copy of a valid official identity document;
  • a Statement of Government Authority (if applicable7);
  • a motivation on why you want to pursue this course;
  • a motivation on the relevance for your organisation (how will your organisation benefit from the course you wish to follow?);
  • a motivation on the relevance for your country (how will your country benefit from the course you wish to follow?);
  • a plan of action (how will you put your new skills and knowledge to work when you return to your employing organisation?).
For more information and formats of the requested documents visit official website.
Fellowship application deadline
Three deadlines have been introduced for submitting fellowship applications for short courses. Fellowship applications for short courses must be submitted before the following fellowship application deadlines.
Fellowship application deadlines 7 February 2012, 1 May 2012 and 2 October 2012
Fellowship applications received after the fellowship application deadline are not considered.
What happens after an application is submitted?
The Dutch institution that offers the course will indicate in Scholarships Online if the candidate has been admitted. Each application will be assessed against the eligibility criteria listed above and, if formulated, against the country-specific priorities.
Selection procedure
Both the Dutch institution and the embassy or consulate will assess the fellowship application. The Dutch institutions will focus on academic qualities while the embassies and consulates will look at the relevance of the application for the development of the employing organisation or country. If applicable, the application also needs to comply with country-specific priorities. These assessments will lead to a selection.
Finally, Nuffic awards the grant covering part of the fellowship holders’ costs, including the tuition fees, to the Dutch institution. The Dutch institutions make the logistical arrangements and pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the master’s degree programme. They also administer the fellowships and give guidance to the fellowship holders.
The selection procedure has a very strict time frame. Between 10 to 16 weeks after the fellowship application deadline candidates have to respond to an availability request. Indicating availability means that if selected the candidate is still available for an NFP fellowship. The candidate needs to respond within 7 days after the request has been sent.
