Master Scholarships, Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS), Netherlands

For excellent Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree programme and for excellent students from all nationalities enrolling in a Master of Law Advanced Programme or MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.
For whom?

1. Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree programme starting September 2013 or February 2014 ( All MA, MSc and LL.M programmes as mentioned on the website Master’s programmes in Leiden, a number of programs have a start date in September only).
2. All nationalities enrolling in the following programmes starting September 2013 or February 2014 (programs listed below have a September start date only, with the exception of Adv. Studies in Air & Space Law):
   • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in Air and Space Law
   • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in European and International Business Law
   • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in International Tax Law
   • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in Public International Law
   • MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy

Additional requirements:

1. In his or her prior academic education abroad, the applicant must have achieved excellent study results which are relevant for the programme for which the student wishes to enroll. As an indication, the student will be among the top 10% for the relevant programme followed abroad
2. The applicant will hold a non-EU/EEA passport and will not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
3. Scholarships will not be awarded to applicants who have already obtained a Leiden University master’s degree
4. Students who are granted a Leiden Excellence Scholarship must comply with and confirm in writing their agreement with the terms and conditions attached to the scholarship prior to the granting of the scholarship.

Scholarship Amount:
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 5 awards:

1. Platinum Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an allowance of €10,000 for living costs
2. Gold Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee*
3. Silver Covers 75% of the tuition fee
4. Bronze Covers 50% of the tuition fee
5. Ivory Covers 25 % of the tuition fee

The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department. The type of award has no reflection on the students’ academic level of excellence.
* The tuition fee will be reduced to the amount of the home fee. Students who have been awarded a Platinum or Gold award still have to pay the home fee themselves.
Application procedure for September 2013 / February 2014 intake

4. Upload your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship on the scholarship page

Deadline

1. Deadline 1 February 2013 for programmes starting in September 2013.
2. Deadline 1 April 2013 only for programmes of the Leiden Law School starting in September 2013.
3. Deadline 1 October 2013 for programmes starting in February 2014.

All LExS applicants will be informed by the scholarship department of Student Educational Affairs.

Letter of motivation
To apply for the scholarship, you should write a letter of motivation (in Word) of a maximum of 500 words, in which you indicate why you believe you should be considered for this scholarship. The Word document should then be attached on the scholarship page in your online application for the master’s programmes for which you are applying.
It is possible to submit applications for more scholarship programmes simultaneously. However, it is not possible to obtain more than 1 scholarship from Leiden University for the same study programme.
If you have already submitted your online application for admission to Leiden University, but would still like to apply for the LExS scholarship, we kindly request you to submit the LExS motivation letter to the Scholarships department (e-mail) before the deadline.
Selection process
The Faculty selection committee will review the applications. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit.

Please note
Students should be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely.
One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €14,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships, University of Cambridge, UK

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge.
Core components

• the University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate*
• a maintenance allowance for a single student (£13, 300 for 12 months at the 2012-13 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
• one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course

Discretionary components
The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

• Family allowance – up to £7,775 for a first child and up to £1,200 for a second child. No funding is provided for a partner.
• Conference attendance – up to £500 a year if you are presenting.
• Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
• Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided – but the termly maintenance allowance reduces per term for up to a year**
• Hardship funding – if there are unforeseen difficulties

*The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities they must accept this and the Trust will not pay these fees.
** The PhD at Cambridge is a three-year degree and Gates Cambridge Scholars should take on a research project that they and their Supervisor think can be completed within three years. However, if there are unforeseen circumstances which mean you need further funding during all or part of your fourth year, the Trust will consider an application on a discretionary basis. But you should not rely on receiving any fourth year funding when you start your PhD.
Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship
If you are receiving a salary from an employer or have another substantial scholarship, the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance.
Eligibility
You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

• a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
• applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
• already a student at Cambridge and want to apply for a new postgraduate course. For example, if you are studying for an MPhil you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to do a PhD. However, if you have already started a course, you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the rest of it.
• already a Gates Cambridge Scholar and want to apply for a second Scholarship. You must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates.

Courses which are not eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:

• BA (undergraduate)
• BA affiliated (a second BA)
• MBBChir Clinical Studies
• Part-time degrees
• Non-degree courses
• Courses at universities other than Cambridge

Ideal candidate
There is no one template for a Gates Cambridge Scholar: each Scholar is different and brings something unique to the programme. But The Trust is looking for four key criteria.
A good fit with Cambridge
You should be able to persuade the Trust that your qualifications and aspirations accord with what Cambridge has to offer in its postgraduate programme. It is important that you can make a convincing argument for doing a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge.
It is therefore important that you fully research your proposed degree using the Graduate Studies Prospectus and the website of the department to which you are applying.
Academic excellence
Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear ability to lead. Evidence of leadership can be expressed in a multitude of ways but the capacity of Gates Cambridge Scholars to ‘take others with them’ is central to the success of the programme.

A commitment to improving the lives of others
A defining characteristic of the Gates Cambridge Scholarships is the commitment of our Scholars to working for the greater good. Although broadly interpreted, this concept is nonetheless fundamental and sets this programme apart from others of its kind.
Personal statement
Each applicant must provide a Personal Statement. It gives you the opportunity to explain why you have the qualities to become a Gates Cambridge Scholar:
The Personal Statement is used by the Gates Cambridge Shortlisting Committees to distinguish between candidates who have been highly ranked by departments on academic grounds. It helps the Committees identify those candidates who, as well as being academically outstanding, possess a capacity for leadership and commitment to improving the lives of others. Note that this is the only part of the application form where you are asked about your ‘fit’ with Gates Cambridge.
The question
Describe – in not more than 500 words – how your interests and achievements, both academic and extra-curricular, demonstrate a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Please also set out why you think there is a good fit between your professional aspiration and the graduate programme at Cambridge for which you are applying.
Key points to consider
You should also bear in mind that the attributes described above are broadly interpreted, and are dependent on the experiences of each applicant, so there is no magic formula for the Personal Statement. But some key points to consider are:

• While there are a no hard and fast rules about what you should put into your Personal Statement, make sure that whatever does go in hits a Gates Cambridge ‘button’
• Keep it focused and stick to 500 words maximum – it’s all we need, and being concise is a useful skill
• Provide examples to back up your statements and avoid generalisations
• It should not be a copy or re-hash of a personal statement for another scholarship, since the criteria may not be quite the same
• Be realistic and concise – avoid exaggerating or labouring a point
• Show that you have really researched the course you are applying for and clearly link it to your future plans
• Review the short biographies of Gates Cambridge Scholars to get an idea of the types of people who have been successful in obtaining a Scholarship
• Ask an advisor and/or someone else to review your statement to ensure it reads well and is free of error and be sure to tell them what the Gates Cambridge criteria are
• Do a final check for spelling and grammar before submitting

Personal Reference
As well as submitting two academic references for admission, applicants for Gates Cambridge Scholarships are asked to submit a Personal Reference as part of their application pack. It is used in the same way as the Personal Statement – to reduce the large number of well-qualified applicants to those who match the Gates Cambridge criteria.
The question
Please give your assessment of the applicant’s suitability for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. These are awarded on the following criteria: intellectual ability, leadership capacity, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and a good fit between the abilities and aspirations of the applicant and what the University of Cambridge can offer in its graduate programme.
Referees are also asked how they rate the applicant for the scholarship: exceptional, strong, not strong, weak.
Referees may paste/type up to 4,000 characters into the on-line reference or upload a separate letter.
Who should write the Personal Reference?
This is a common question. You should definitely not ask friends or family, or someone who is unable to comment on your suitability for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.
You should ask someone of appropriate standing who is able to answer the question with authority and who understands what type of person Gates Cambridge is looking for and how competitive the Scholarship is.
Many applicants ask a current or former academic advisor who is aware of their personal attributes, others ask a current or former employer, while others ask senior staff in an organisation they may have volunteered with. These are all sensible choices, although this is by no means an exhaustive list. Some applicants ask one of their two academic referees to write the personal reference. This is fine as long as that person has a good understanding of your personal qualities. The important point to remember is that the Personal Referee must understand what the Scholarship is about and must be able to write authoritatively about your leadership potential and commitment to improving the lives of others.
Points to consider
Many points in the section about the Personal Statement also apply to the Personal Reference. Further points to consider are:

• It is essential that the Personal Referee is fully briefed about the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, especially its selection criteria
• It is useful when referees use specific examples of how you meet the Scholarship’s criteria
• While your referees are likely to be busy, you will need to ensure they understand the need to keep the reference focused on the Gates Cambridge criteria and not, for example, rehash a standard or previous reference. We see a number of references which are generic and these do not do help the applicant stand out as a potential Gates Cambridge Scholar.

Selection
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are extremely competitive: over 4,000 applicants apply for 90 Scholarships each year.
Given the intense competition, the Trust has a four stage selection process:

• Departmental ranking – the very best applicants to each department are ranked on academic merit only
• Shortlisting – Gates Cambridge committees review the applications of ranked candidates using all four Gates Cambridge criteria and put forward a list for interview
• Interview – all shortlisted candidates have a short interview to assess how they meet all four Gates Cambridge criteria
• Selection – chairs of interview panels meet to decide the final list of Scholars

Please note that Trust is not able to provide feedback to applicants.
How competitive
Competition for admission to the University of Cambridge and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship is intense.
The University of Cambridge is normally ranked in the top three universities worldwide. It typically receives over 9,000 applications for postgraduate study and research from non-British applicants, approximately 1,700 of whom take up their place at Cambridge.
Round 1 (USA)

• around 800 eligible applicants apply
• around 200 are highly ranked by departments in Cambridge
• 100 are invited to interview
• 40 offered a Gates Cambridge Scholarship after interview

Round 2: (International)

• around 4,000 eligible applicants apply
• around 350 are highly ranked by departments in Cambridge
• 110 are invited to interview
• 50 offered a Gates Cambridge Scholarship after interview

Timetable
There are two application rounds:

• Round 1: US citizens normally resident in the USA
• Round 2: citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA

Once you have submitted your application you and your referees will receive an email notification from the Graduate Admissions Office within 30 hours explaining how to upload supporting documents and references. You must submit this documentation by the deadlines given.
Once your application has been received, the Trust will ask academic departments in Cambridge to rank their very best candidates. A shortlisting committee then applies the four main criteria of the Scholarships to produce a final interview list.
We hold interviews in the USA in early February for Round 1 candidates and in Cambridge in late March for Round 2 candidates. If you are unable to attend in person we will interview you by Skype or phone. You will be told within a week of the interview whether you have been successful.
We advise that you begin your application as early as possible and do not wait until the deadline.
The next application round opens in early September 2012 for entry in October 2013. Scholarship deadlines are:

• Round 1 – US citizens based in the USA – 16 October 2012
• Round 2 – all other eligible candidates – 4 December 2012
• You must submit your application no later than midnight (UK time) on the dates given. The Trust cannot guarantee that applications submitted after the deadlines will be considered.
• You must supply all supporting documents (transcripts and anything else required by the department) within 7 days of submitting your application.
• You must supply references (two academic, one personal) within 14 days of submitting your application.
• If English is not your first language you will need to submit your language test scores.

*Note: if a course deadline is earlier than the relevant funding deadline above (for example, the Faculty of History) you must apply by the earlier course deadline.

International Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships, University Of Wales, UK

A number of other Scholarships are available from the University of Wales, Newport. Students applying for September 2012 or January 2013 entry are eligible to apply for these awards.
Students wishing to apply for these scholarships need to download and complete the Scholarship Application fom at official website. A limited number of Scholarships are available and will be awarded to students on the basis of outstanding achievement. Categories you may wish to consider applying under are:

• Academic
• Social or Cultural: including community projects or voluntary work
• Outstanding Artistic Achievement

The application form requires you to undertake a 500-700 word piece of work supporting your application. Please note that applications must be fully completed and your supporting statement must be within the word limit.
Scholarships are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants and awards are made for the academic year 2012/2013 (or for the duration of your course). Scholarships of £1,000 per year will be awarded and the scholarship award will be deducted from your annual tuition fee. A maximum of 10 undergraduate and 5 postgraduate scholarship awards will be made for each intake (September 2012 and January 2013).
Scholarships will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee based upon merit through consideration of a completed Scholarship Application Form. These awards will be made at the beginning of the each semester and the decision by the Scholarship Committee is final.
Applicants must hold a Visa Letter/CAS for a taught undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University and have firmly accepted their offer before submitting an application.
Conditional offer holders may apply but will only be considered for the scholarship if all conditions have been met before the deadline date.

DAAD Scholarship for Students from Developing Countries
The MIPLC is a part of the DAAD’s program of “Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries.” If you would like to apply for the scholarship offered in this context, please note that several special conditions apply. Please read the information provided here very carefully.
DAAD Scholarship Requirements
DISCLAIMER: The following information has been put together with the utmost care; however, we cannot guarantee its accuracy. Please refer to the DAAD scholarship brochure for the latest information. Where MIPLC and DAAD have differing requirements, assume that the higher requirement will be applied.
If you would like to apply for the DAAD scholarship “Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries”, please make sure that you fulfill the following formal requirements:

• You are 36 years or younger;
• You hold at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree, completed with above-average results;
• You received your degree no more than six years ago;
• You have at least two years of full-time professional experience;
• Your English test scores meet the MIPLC requirements, i.e. IELTS band 7.0, or TOEFL ibT 100/ cbT 250/ pbT 600. Institutional TOEFL scores will not be accepted.

Due to the high volume of applications, we have to apply these criteria very strictly. If you do not fulfill them, you will not be eligible for the DAAD scholarship.
Application Procedure
To apply for this scholarship, please proceed as follows:

• Please refer to the DAAD program brochure 2013/14 (not yet available) and read the information carefully;
• Determine whether you are eligible to apply by DAAD and MIPLC standards;
• Apply for admission to the MIPLC by using our online application system, accessible below, and follow the instructions provided;
• When you come to the end of the online application, check “I would like to apply for financial assistance” and “I would like to apply for the DAAD scholarship” and complete the MIPLC Financial Assistance Application Form that opens automatically;
• Print the forms and add all required documentation, as per the instructions provided;
• Download and complete the DAAD Scholarship Application Form and add the other documents required by the DAAD (for details, please refer to the brochure – NB: the MIPLC does not require a research exposé);
• Send your complete application as detailed below.

Please submit your application directly to the MIPLC, unless you are from Cameroon, Myanmar, or Nigeria, in which case you must submit your application through the German Embassy in your country.
Please make sure that your file is complete with all the documents indicated above. Otherwise, your application cannot be processed. Your complete file must reach the MIPLC by the dates specified below.
If You Have Questions Concerning the DAAD Application Form and Requirements
Section 6, “Duration of planned stay in Germany”: The start and end dates of the academic year 2013/14 have not yet been set. The program will probably start in early October 2013 and will end in mid-September 2014 (date of submission of Master’s Thesis). The exact dates will be announced in due time in our academic calendar.
The MIPLC does not require a “research exposé” (DAAD brochure, page 12). Therefore, you do not have to (and should not) submit such an exposé.
For any other questions you may have concerning the DAAD Application Form (e.g., “What should I enter in section…?”), or the DAAD requirements (e.g., concerning the documents to be submitted as per the DAAD’s brochure), please contact your nearest DAAD office.
The MIPLC cannot answer any questions related to the DAAD. The MIPLC can only answer questions related to the MIPLC’s own requirements.
Processing Information
As a first step, all complete applications will be screened by the MIPLC and processed for admission. All candidates will be informed by the MIPLC whether or not they have been admitted to our LL.M. program. If you do not get admitted to the MIPLC, your DAAD scholarship application will not be considered, either.
From the list of admitted candidates, the MIPLC will then put together a shortlist of candidates for the DAAD scholarship. Once this list has been confirmed by the DAAD, all shortlisted applicants must undergo a telephone interview.
The final decision about allocating the scholarship rests with the DAAD. The successful applicant(s) will be informed by the DAAD directly. All unsuccessful applicants will receive communication from the MIPLC.
You should learn about the outcome of your application by late February of the new year. In the meantime, please refrain from contacting us or the DAAD to ask for status updates.
Special Application Deadlines
You must apply (more than) a year in advance.
The deadline for applications is October 15. Your complete file with all required documents (this includes your English test scores) must reach the MIPLC by this date. Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered.
Please send your documents in good time to ensure their timely arrival at the MIPLC. We are regrettably not in a position to track your files with the German postal service or any courier services.
Applicants from Cameroon, Myanmar, or Nigeria must submit their application file to the German Embassy in their home country. The deadline for such applications for the 2012/13 intake was July 31, 2011. Applications from Cameroon, Myanmar, or Nigeria for the academic year 2012/13 therefore can no longer be accepted. • Merit Scholarship Application Form

As part of the application process you are required to write a short statement in support of your application, which should address the following points:

• Why you are applying for the scholarship,
• How you will benefit from the opportunities that being given the award will provide, and
• How you would contribute to the University community during your studies here.

You may refer to activities, achievements and personal qualities which are particularly relevant to your application.
You should also include:

• A scanned transcript of your highest academic qualification,
• Evidence of English language competence e.g. a scanned copy of your IELTS certificate (where appropriate), and
• A scanned copy of your University offer letter (or email if you have not received your letter).

Applications must be complete. Applications which are incomplete, missing required data or are illegible will be considered invalid. You may only apply for an award once. Multiple applications will not be considered.
The School’s award panel will meet to consider eligible scholarship applications received by the respective due dates.

In the event that two applications are scored identically and only one award is available, the panel will award the scholarship to the first application received, using the date of receipt in the University as the relevant date.
Please note: All scholarship applicant should intend to complete to MSc stage. Any successful scholarship applicant that chooses to exit their course early will be expected to reimburse all or part of their award at the discretion of the School.
Notification and acceptance

• Successful applicants will be informed in the first instance by email
• Applicants will be required to respond by email to accept the offer. A formal scholarship offer letter will then be issued and dispatched by email. Failure to accept the offer will lead to the scholarship offer being withdrawn and offered to an alternative applicant.

Terms and conditions

• All scholarships are awarded in the form of a discount on fees paid.
• A scholarship will be withdrawn if:
  • You fail to accept the offer within the time permitted.
  • Your scholarship or University application is found to contain incomplete or inaccurate information.
  • You are found to have committed academic misconduct once enrolled at the University
  • You are found to have committed non-academic misconduct once enrolled at the University
  • You fail to pass module assignments or end of module exams at the first attempt once enrolled on your course
  • You defer or suspend your studies, withdraw from the University or are suspended or withdrawn from the University
  • You fail to make payment for fees due to the University within 23 days of the due date
  • In the event that a scholarship is withdrawn, you will need to pay the full fees due for your course

Appeals Process
All decisions on scholarship applications will be made by the School’s Scholarship Panel. All decisions are final and we cannot enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants. There are no grounds for appeal against an unsuccessful application with the following exception:

• Where there is evidence of alleged improper conduct or irregular procedure during the scholarship awards process.

If you wish to appeal on the above ground, you should write in the first instance to the Head of School, outlining your evidence of alleged improper conduct or irregular procedure during the awards process. The Head of School will respond to you within 20 working days.

PhD Scholarship in Physics, University of Queensland, Australia

Quantum Simulation with Neutral Atoms – Experiment

Study in sunny subtropical Brisbane, Australia, within the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS – official website) at the University of Queensland – ranked in the top 100 institutions internationally. We have a vacancy for a promising domestic or international student for a new experimental project, utilizing ultracold atoms for quantum simulation.
By lowering the temperature of an ultracold gas of 87Rb and 41K atoms, a novel state of matter known as a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) is produced. These atoms will be then loaded into a configurable optical trap created through the rapid modulation of a tightly focused optical beam. With the ability to address and measure individual atoms in the optical trap, a toolbox for the simulation of magnetic spin systems will be realized. Immediate applications to the understanding of as-yet unexplained quantum magnetic phenomena, and unconventional superfluidity, are the direct goals of this research.
This experimental project will allow for the development of diverse and transferable skills, including electronic and optical design, experimental system design and implementation, software design, and data analysis. This project will also allow for attendance of related international workshops and conferences. There will also be the opportunity to interact with other projects within EQuS, as well as the theoretical quantum atom optics group at the University of Queensland
The remuneration for this position begins at $25,007 p.a. tax free, and indexed annually. A priority top-up scholarship of $5000 is available for exceptional candidates.
